Want the FAA to install a weather camera at your airport?

By General Aviation News Staff · December 17, 2022 ·

The FAA is taking suggestions through Dec. 20, 2022, for locations to place one of its weather cameras as it expands that program.

The FAA has installed 290 weather cameras in Alaska, Hawaii, and Colorado that give pilots supplemental preflight and inflight information, as well as a way to monitor meteorological conditions at airports and en route locations.

The weather cameras give a high-definition view of the site on a clear day next to another window that shows current conditions. The cameras also give pilots an opportunity to replay the weather conditions at the site over the previous hour, with updates every 10 minutes.

The agency is looking to expand that program and wants inputs from pilots, airport officials, and others.

You can make your suggestion here by filling out a simple form. All it asks is:

  • The latitude and longitude of where you think the weather camera should be installed
  • Anything else you think would be important, such as details on how a weather camera might help pilots flying at, to, or past this location.

May I suggest 92A in southeastern Tennessee near Georgia and within 2 miles of the Great Smokey Mountains. They are a grass airport with a busy Glider airplane school that can use them for Ridge Lift. They are at a gap in the mountains used by VFR traffic XC traffic. All would benefit and would also serve Cleveland (RZR) and Athens (MMI). They have AWOS and 92A does not. Even medical helicopters and fire suppression would have current visual reference. And so close to the river passing through the gap or wind over the ridge causes cloud or fog. This camera would benefit so many pilots and tourist.
