
Kevin Wolley submitted this photo and note: “I landed at Portland-Hillsboro Airport (KHIO) in Oregon in the red and white Cessna 172 and taxied to the FBO for fuel. Much to my surprise, a B-17 and a Bf-109 were on the ramp, staged for an air show at the nearby Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, home of the Spruce Goose, in McMinnville. I found this delightful view of my modest mount from the shadow of the bomber, and reflected on the airmen of World War II who were my boyhood heroes, and moved me to 25 years of flying at FedEx.”

One of the highlights of my flying days back in the ‘70s was when I was on short final in a 172 to 30R at STL. There was a discussion between the tower and “Boeing XYZ” turning final behind me—which runway did they want? They said R, so I turned around to look after I cleared the runway—a B-17! Just sharing the air with one was a thrill…
