National STOL Series expands in 2023

The National STOL Series is expanding in 2023 with more events and new locations.

The 2023 season series kicks off March 17 in Jennings, Louisiana, at the third annual Swamp STOL Competition & Fly-In.

The series then heads to Somerton Airport in Yuma County, Arizona, for Outlaw STOL April 22-23. This one-day competition was established in 2020 by Jonathan Stains, and it is the second year that National STOL has partnered with the event, according to officials.

In May, SoCal STOL moves to Flabob Airport in Riverside, California. Home to EAA Chapter One. Flababians, as the locals refer to themselves, are hosting the National STOL Series’ only West Coast event, in conjunction with the 10th Annual Slow & Low Fly-In.

Wayne, Nebraska, is the first new stop on the season schedule, making it the most centrally located event of the series, officials said. Slated for May 26-28, the Wayne America Fly-In is making STOL history as the only event to host both National STOL and STOL DRAG Competitions at a single event, officials noted.

The Sodbusters STOL will be held at Hartford Municipal Airport in Wisconsin, July 22-23, the weekend before EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

Rocky Mountain STOL, hosted in Pinedale, Wyoming, by Emblem Aviation, is joining the series this season Aug. 11-13 after a successful showing at its inaugural event in August 2022. The event quickly developed a reputation for spoiling pilots with breakfast, ice cream, and a bus ride up to Half Moon Lake Lodge for a four-course meal, officials said.

The location for Lonestar STOL, the series’ founding event, is yet to be determined, according to organizers.

For the past three years, Lonestar STOL also doubled as the series national championships. For the first time since its inception, the series will host its season championships as a stand-alone event in December, with date and location to be announced.

Other new events joining the season schedule are the Isle Fly-In July 7-9 in Isle, Minnesota, and Georgia STOL Sept. 22-23 at Whitlock Field in Newnan, Georgia.

A Mid-Atlantic location and an event in Nashville, Tennessee, are in early planning phases, officials said.
