DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — Power Flow Systems hit a milestone in early 2023: Delivering 6,500 systems since the first tuned exhaust system was shipped in 1999.
“During the 2010 through 2020 period, both sales and shipments consistently hovered in the range of 15 to 20 systems per month,” said Darren Tilman, president of Power Flow Systems. “For the past 18 months, though, we have been averaging well over 25 systems shipped per month and our backlog of orders has been steadily increasing. The primary incentive for new orders appears to be word of mouth. Pilots are pleased with the numbers provided by a tuned exhaust.”
A properly designed tuned exhaust system substantially improves the efficiency of an aircraft engine, allowing it to extract more power from each combustion cycle, company officials said. Power Flow tuned exhaust systems are FAA approved via STC and provide an increase in top speed capability of 4-7 mph or the ability to fly at established cruise speeds saving up to 2.2 gph, plus an additional 100-250 feet per minute in climb, and an increase of 2,000 feet to 5,000 feet in service ceiling, officials explained.
With the company’s recently introduced systems for Cessna’s six cylinder powered 180, 182, and 185 aircraft, as well as the 205 through 210 series airframes, Tilman said he “expects these trends to continue, if not accelerate.”

To meet the growing demand and reduce the lead times for new orders, the company has embarked on a major expansion of its Daytona Beach production facility, as well as adding employees, company officials noted.

This is one of those obvious rich mans toy, as $6k to $8k for an exhaust system!!!??? On a 4 cyl engine???!!! I couldn’t justify that even if my plane lasted 50 more years. I am glad a good old American company is doing so well. My hats off to them, just not my wallet open.

Great, now make one for a 300 horse Bonanza!
Why are Power Flow Tuned Exhausts not in new production Cessna airplanes? Seems like a no- brainer to me.
the type certificate requires the originally certified parts.
The Powerflow can be added with an STC and then sell the original system for a lot of $$.
Power Flow Exhaust should be factory installed for new production aircraft. Yes it should be a “No Brainer”!! The STC is not an excuse, just remember that Garmin equipment was NOT part of factory equipment back in the day, it was an STC – Today all the fancy avionics ARE standard factory installed. Cessna COULD make Power Flow Exhaust factory installed. Or at least an option.
Ah, another rare case of the GA airplane designs coming into this century. Tuned exhaust systems have been used in high-performance car engine designs since the early 1950s. Welcome to the mid-twentieth century GA airplane owners! Enjoy the improve efficiency. I wonder of those new tuned exhaust systems sound as cool as they do on cars? Glass pack mufflers maybe? (;->))
