Picture of the Day: Glassy water

By General Aviation News Staff · April 16, 2023 ·

Joe Parker submitted this photo and note: “A perfect day to do refresher training on glassy water. I was waiting for the last of the fog to clear before heading off on what was a most fantastic morning of flying around Lakeland, Florida, with Ken, a senior instructor at Jack Brown’s Seaplane Base. Thank you Ken, Ben, and Patricia.”

I have owned an amphibious float plane for four years now, having SES rating for 15 years. Although I have trained extensively to land on glassy water, I have yet to actually land on classic mirror water. I am cautious when operating on calm days not to get suckered into water that appears to be suitable for a normal water landing. Under these conditions, I always set up for a glassy water landing. Conditions of late have been extremely calm such that I have made 11 glassy water landings. My plane was down a year having both wings recovered. I stopped in Jack Browns in Jan for a float plane fix. Flew with Ken for an hour. I finally got my plane back the fist of April, and flown the socks off the thing since.
