Aspen rolls back price on Evolution E5

By General Aviation News Staff · May 8, 2023 ·

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the initial certification and shipment of the Evolution E5, Aspen Avionics is rolling back the price of the primary flight display by $1,000 to $4,995.

Introduced in 2018 as an electronic flight instrument (EFI), the E5 has gone through a number of improvements, including modifying the certification to a TSO’d Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) with full HSI with the option of adding advanced features, such as true airspeed, outside air temperature, wind direction and speed, and WAAS GPS mode annunciations, for $495, company officials said.

The E5 does not require dealer installation and can be sold over the counter to aircraft owners, company officials added.

It also can be traded in at any time in exchange for the top-of-the-line Aspen Evolution Pro MAX display system for $4,495, which includes the required Remote Sensor Module (RSM) with GPS, Aspen officials said, noting the upgrade to the Evolution Pro MAX can be done with no impact to the existing panel layout with minimal wiring changes, depending on the other installed avionics.

After months of research on Garmin, Dynon, Aspen, price, availability and integration to legacy avionics, I installed an Aspen E5, in my 2002 C172R. It wasn’t a very smooth transition. In fact it took four units to get to the right one. Each previous unit had a problem, from inaccurate pressure readings to a complete crash. However, what I do have now, works very, very well and I’m glad I made the purchase. The customer support to get me to this stage has been excellent, two-day replacements in some cases. The GPSS for approaches is right on each time, using my KAP140, and the E5. No touch screen to try and tap while in turbulence. The resolution is excellent when compared to the G5 and the “Mindcraft/Commodore 64” graphical resolution. Crisp clear display. Flying with an HSI is sweet. There are a couple of things I wish they would listen to for upgrades or future versions…like the it would be nice if the heading bug dashed line would stay in place as an option. It’s not as pronounced as it is on steam gauges. But I’m getting use to it.

Is the Aspen E5 PFD available with a dual-cue flight director?

I would prefer to give Aspen my money and not to Garmin, but v-bars are a non-starter.
