Teen pianist wins Flying Musicians scholarship

By General Aviation News Staff · May 31, 2023 ·

The Flying Musicians Association (FMA) has named its 16th recipient of the FMA Solo scholarship program: Justin Duval from San Jose, California. Justin will begin flight training at AeroDynamic Aviation in San Jose at the Reid-Hillview Airport of Santa Clara County (KRHV).

Justin’s musical achievements have led to many opportunities, like playing at Carnegie Hall and the Oakland California Temple, performing pieces ranging from Sonatas to traditional Chinese music.

“Much like music, aviation has been a constant obsession of mine, as I aspire to be a commercial airline pilot,” Justin said.

The association received 87 nominations from high school music directors across the United States for the scholarship, which takes an aspiring music student from zero time to solo. FMA covers roughly 15 hours of dual instruction, online ground school, and training materials. The scholarship recipient also receives various products from sponsors of the scholarship.

FMA officials said they instituted the scholarship program because they recognize the parallel skills involved in flying and performing music and want to “promote both areas of growth in our inspired and dedicated future leaders.”
