The Iowa City Airport Commission has created a charitable giving fund to raise money for improvements at Iowa City Municipal Airport (KIOW).
The fund will help with general support, upkeep, beautification, and capital improvements to the airport’s buildings, equipment, and grounds, according to a news release from the city.
The release noted how the city-owned general aviation airport is a “vital gateway” to Iowa City, as well as “crucial to supporting area businesses and medical facilities.”
The first project for the Iowa City Municipal Airport Charitable Giving Fund is a new mural on an airport hangar. The 12-foot-high by 300-foot-long mural, which is being created in partnership with the city’s public art advisory committee, is expected to cost around $38,000.
City officials hope to raise $35,000 for the mural. All donors will have their names on a plaque in the airport’s terminal.
Anyone who donates more than $5,000 before July 15, 2023, will be allowed to suggests elements for the mural’s design, such as having their aircraft included, city officials said.
Pilot and aviation enthusiasts who would like to donate to the fund can do so online at the Community Foundation of Johnson County.
KIOW is the third most active general aviation airport in Iowa, with approximately 36,000 flight operations annually, according to airport officials. A 2022 report from the Iowa Department of Transportation found that operations at KIOW generate $24 million for the local economy.
