First steps taken for permanent tower at KJYO

By General Aviation News Staff · June 19, 2023 ·

A mobile air traffic control tower is in place at Leesburg Executive Airport (KJYO) in Virginia while work begins on building a permanent tower.

The second busiest general aviation airport in the Virginia, KJYO was the site of a remote tower program until June 14, 2023. The remote tower program was canceled by the FAA, which is paying for the mobile tower and air traffic controllers through the end of September 2023.

After that, the town will take over the costs of the tower until a permanent tower can be built, according to officials, who note the FAA will pay for controllers through Sept. 30, 2028.

On June 13 the town council approved spending $270,000 for a siting study for a permanent tower.

The total cost of building the tower is expected to be around $16 million, with the FAA and the Virginia Department of Aviation picking up 98% of the total cost.

It should be at least as tall as the one at ATL, about 400 feet, that should give a decent set of views of the entire airfield.
