PC-12 prop approved for shorter takeoff performance

By General Aviation News Staff · March 29, 2024 ·

The 7-bladed MTV-47 MT-Propeller, known as “The Silent 7,” is now approved by both the FAA and EASA for even shorter takeoff distances, which increases the operational capability of the Pilatus PC-12, according to officials with Germany-based MT-Propeller.

According to company officials, other advantages of the installation of the Silent 7 on the PC-12 Series include:

  • No engine modifications necessary
  • Certified ground roll distance reduced by approximately 10%
  • Certified takeoff distance over a 50 foot obstacle reduced by approximately 15%
  • Climb performance improved
  • Aircraft noise level is up to 4 dB(A) less than with the original metal propeller
  • Due to the smaller diameter, the propeller has more ground clearance for less blade tip erosion and FODs (Foreign Object Damage).

The MT-Propeller natural composite blades have no life limitation and are repairable in case of a FOD, company officials added.

Does anyone make “fod cuffs”(foam tip protectors with bungees, at least for the bottom two tips).

It looks good, performs a bit better, is quieter in the cabin, draws attention on the ground, sounds different from a 5 blade flying over, but, nobody wants to hook a tug up due to worry over hitting a blade. Just be careful with it with ground handling!
