Hidden danger: Dust devils

Dust devils present significant hazards to general aviation pilots. They have been present in more than 170 accidents the National Transportation Safety Board has investigated since 1982, according to agency officials.

A new video featuring NTSB meteorologist Paul Suffern offers tips on how to detect and avoid dust devils.

    Hmmm … used to fly through them while conducting pipeline patrol in the Texas Panhandle. Looking back, it’s always startling to consider how hazardous that job was — and is for those who are still “line flyers.”

    Usually can see dust devils and just circumvent them if it’s too turbulent to get above them.
