The Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) has put out a call to action for pilots to submit positive comments on the Bureau of Land Management’s Resource Management Plan for the Bears Ears National Monument (BENM) in Utah.
These public comments will guide the bureau’s final decisions.
The BLM is proposing that aircraft only be allowed to take off and land at the Bluff Airport and the Fry Canyon Airstrip, according to RAF officials.
“By placing this limitation, it serves to essentially close the other 16 airstrips in the BENM,” RAF officials said. “All 18 of the airstrips have existed and been in use for the past 40 to 70 years and we request that none of them be closed or banned arbitrarily without first evaluating the merits of each.”
“It is essential that we submit positive comments about preserving these recreational assets,” said RAF Utah Liaison and Utah Back Country Pilots board member Wendy Lessig. “Your voice counts!”
The deadline to submit comments is June 11, 2024. Comments can be submitted here.
RAF officials have put together a list of “talking points” to help pilots put together their comments, as well as a list of all 18 airstrips in the BENM here.
