A Flying Start

By Ted Luebbers · May 27, 2024 ·

Every May, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapters around the world hold “flying start” programs to introduce people to flying.

Similar to the Young Eagles program for kids, Flying Start is for adults who are interested in learning how to fly.

For EAA Chapter 534 at Leesburg International Airport (KLEE) in Florida, the 2024 Flying Start program, held May 18, brought some familiar faces to the airport.

All 10 adults who participated in this year’s program were parents or relatives of recent Young Eagles.

“Apparently, their excitement about flying was infectious at home,” chapter officials said.

The day started in a classroom where participants were introduced to EAA and its goals, the flight training process, and how much it costs.

Several members of the chapter discussed why they became pilots, and why they enjoy the freedom and pleasure they get from flying.

John Weber, EAA Chapter 534 Vice President and Light Sport Certified Flight Instructor, was the moderator for the Flying Start program.

After the classroom presentation, those wishing to take a demonstration flight with one of the chapter’s pilots were assigned to a pilot and plane.

During the flight, which last about 30 minutes, the participant may be given the chance to get the feel of handling the plane by taking the controls under the watchful eye of the EAA pilot.

Five EAA Chapter 534 pilots volunteered their time, planes, and fuel to cap off the program.

The flights are free for those exploring aviation, as is the presentation.

All those who took part in the program automatically become EAA members for six months.
