A new accolade for Amelia Earhart

By General Aviation News Staff · May 28, 2024 ·

ATCHISON, Kansas — The “Concert in the Sky” fireworks show at the annual Amelia Earhart Festival has been voted #3 in the nation by USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for “Best Places to See Fireworks.”

“Being voted the #3 fireworks show in the country among nominees in large cities across the U.S. is a testament to the tremendous pride for Amelia’s legacy in her small Atchison, Kansas, hometown,” said Jacque Pregont, coordinator of the Amelia Earhart Festival. “It’s especially exciting to announce this honor during this anniversary week of Amelia’s historic flight on May 20-21, 1932 — when she became world-renowned as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.”

Hosted in front of Earhart’s childhood home on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River, the 28-minute “Concert in the Sky” fireworks show draws an estimated 50,000 visitors from around the world to celebrate Earhart’s birth in Atchison on July 24, 1897.

This year’s Amelia Earhart Festival is set for July 19-20, 2024, with the “Concert in the Sky” fireworks show on Saturday, July 20, beginning at approximately 9:30 p.m. CST, following an aerobatics performance at 7:30 p.m. Both events are hosted at the Riverfront Park in Atchison, Kansas, and are free to the public.

Produced near the Amelia Earhart Bridge, the Concert in the Sky is choreographed to music (with a simulcast on KAIR 93.7FM radio station).

The show is produced by Stellar Fireworks, a Wichita-based fireworks company that produces award-winning pyrotechnic experiences across the country, including the “Stadium of Fire” in Provo, Utah.
