The search for Amelia Earhart continues — in her hometown

The Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum, home to Muriel, the world’s last remaining Lockheed Electra 10-E that is identical to the plane Amelia flew on her final flight, will host two free programs — Adventure Amelia: A Conversation with Explorers in the Search for Amelia Earhart and Deep Dive With Deep Sea Vision — that will bring experts in the search for Amelia’s plane to her Atchison, Kansas, hometown during the 2024 Amelia Earhart Festival.

Both programs feature Tony Romeo, founder of Deep Sea Vision, “who has captured the world’s attention with his company’s recent discovery on the Pacific Ocean floor that has reignited the hope of finding Amelia’s plane,” according to museum officials.

“We look forward to joining Atchison’s celebration of Amelia’s courageous life and seeing the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum’s stunning Lockheed Electra 10-E that is exactly like the plane Deep Sea Vision believes we have found,” said Romeo. “We’re determined to bring closure to what happened to this groundbreaking pilot and women’s rights advocate who continues to be among the world’s most admired women. Amelia’s perseverance, intelligence and ambition inspire us forward as we heed her timeless wisdom: ‘Never interrupt someone doing what you said couldn’t be done.’”

While the programs are free, advance registration is required as seating is limited, museum officials said. You can register here for Adventure Amelia: A Conversation with Explorers in the Search for Amelia Earhart, slated for July 19, and here for Deep Dive With Deep Sea Vision, slated for July 20.

The Amelia Earhart Festival kicks off July 18 with a benefit concert, “An Evening Inspired By Amelia,” featuring a new composition by Kansas City composer Dana Mengel. The five-movement piece will be performed by the Amazing Strings Ensemble. Tickets are $25 and include a reception where guests will have the opportunity to meet Deep Sea Vision explorers Tony Romeo and Lloyd Romeo. All proceeds support educational programming at the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum.

The festival then takes off July 19, featuring a line-up of events including a “Concert in the Sky” fireworks show on July 21, that was recently ranked #3 on USA Today’s “10 Best Places to See Fireworks.”
