Continental revealed at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024 that it has partnered with APUS Zero Emission GmbH, an award-winning German company involved in developing hybrid-electric aircraft with hydrogen fuel cells.
The joint collaboration “is focused on exploring sustainable, cutting-edge piston engine technology that could significantly reduce general aviation’s climate impact,” Continental officials said.
The two companies will focus on developing “innovative” powerplant solutions for current and future aircraft owners,” company officials said, adding “potential new developments will aim to reduce emissions and enhance the engine’s overall efficiency during phases of flight.”
“At Continental, we believe the future of flying is the industry’s responsibility, and we are committed to pioneering engine advancements that enhance aircraft performance and contribute to more sustainable skies,” said Dr. David Dörner, Vice President of Global Research and Development. “This partnership highlights our commitment to not only greener but also innovative propulsion solutions as we champion continued progress with Sustainable Alternative Fuels (SAF), unleaded fuels, and other forthcoming energy sources and technologies.”

Expanded Factory Training
Continental Aerospace Technologies also introduced its next phase in its factory training program for aviation technicians.
As a part of the newly integrated Continental Aerospace Technologies Academy, the program will offer multiple levels of training for aviation professionals.
The program includes factory training at the company’s facilities in Mobile, Alabama, and Sankt Egidien, Germany. The week-long training programs provide a comprehensive curriculum that begins with piston engine theory and progresses onto practical, hands-on instruction and isolation procedures, according to company officials.
The courses are designed for both avgas and Jet-A engines with two levels of training available for each engine type. These trainings are designed in accordance with FAA guidelines, and eligible participants can earn 40 hours towards their IA renewal upon completion.
In the next phase of the program, Continental will bring training to mechanics out in the field.
“As the program continued to grow in popularity, engine shops expressed their interest in having their entire team attend but, this is not always feasible due to the shop’s heavy workload and customer commitments,” said Karen Hong, CEO & President of Continental. “However, we recognized the critical role that skilled mechanics play in proper engine maintenance, and we believe that the additional understanding, experience, and exchange of best practices can enhance the owner’s flying experience.”
Continental recently conducted its first international avgas field training session. CSA Aviation (Pty) Ltd- Cirrus South Africa hosted the two-week training, with students from across the region participating in the same training course typically taught at the factory in Mobile.
