Girls in Aviation Day hits milestone

By General Aviation News Staff · September 12, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Girls in Winnipeg, Canada, participated in a previous Girls in Aviation Day.

Women in Aviation International is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Girls in Aviation Day, with events planned around the globe.

Slated for Sept. 21, 2024, more than 30,000 girls between the ages of 8 and 18 are expected to attend events in their communities hosted by Women in Aviation International (WAI) chapters and corporate members. WAI also offers additional virtual resources, activities, information, and instructional videos via the free Aviation for Girls app, available year-round, officials noted.

More than 185 events are planned at airports, FBOs, museums, and hangars across 43 U.S. states, two U.S. territories, and 33 countries across North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The events will include a variety of experiences, from touring airports and looking at planes close-up to sectional chart scavenger hunts or learning about aircraft engines and avionics with maintenance technicians.

Kids who don’t have access to an in-person event can download the Aviation for Girls app for free to participate in a virtual Girls in Aviation Day, officials said.

WAI event hosts will offer 50 free activity kits to participants, which includes a backpack filled with the magazine Aviation for Girls, a propeller activity to teach aviation concepts, a sectional chart for early navigation practice, a WAI sticker, an glitter tattoo, the WAI Career Guide titled “The Sky is Unlimited,” and a 10th anniversary bandana.

Caps, keychains, and special edition T-shirts for adults and children are available to buy.
