
Garmin co-founders Dr. Min Kao and the late Gary Burrell were inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) at the 60th annual ceremony held Sept. 14, 2024, at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
Kao continues to serve as Garmin’s executive chairman, while Burrell’s contributions remain a cornerstone of the company’s leadership, according to Garmin officials.
Some noteworthy Garmin innovations include:
- 1991: Garmin’s first aviation product, the GPS 100AVD, brought GPS navigation to general aviation.
- 1994: The Garmin GPS 155 became the first certified GPS receiver for instrument flight approaches.
- 1998: The GNS 430 and 530 systems set the standard for integrated NAV/COM solutions.
- 2004: The G1000 integrated flight deck became a benchmark for cockpit innovation.
- 2010: The company introduced the Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP) system.
- 2020: Garmin received the Robert J. Collier Trophy for Garmin Autoland, the first certified autonomous system for emergency aircraft landings.
The NAHF honors individuals whose groundbreaking contributions have shaped the world of flight.
