Second generation ICARUS focuses on weather decision making for pilots

By General Aviation News Staff · December 23, 2024 · Leave a Comment

ICARUS Devices has released its second-generation ICARUS Smart View Limiting Device, which includes “numerous improvements and refinements” to the device, which was introduced in 2021.

The Instrument Conditions Awareness Recognition and Understanding System (ICARUS) is a Smart View Limiting Device that allows CFIs to dial in simulated poor visibility for scenario-based weather training, company officials explain.

The ICARUS visor’s improvements include a more durable blend of Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Film and the ability for the user to swap the film out if necessary, according to company officials.

The ICARUS Power Control Unit has a new look, USB-C charging, and a 63% larger battery. The manual control button and indicator lights have also been redesigned to improve the user experience, company officials said.

“The ICARUS App received the most significant overhaul, with a special focus on weather decision making,” company officials said. “The control page’s three user-controlled buttons are now color coded to correspond to their flight condition. For example, if the visibility is set to 0 miles of visibility the button will be Low IMC. Instructors can also select longer transition times for more gradual and insidious VFR into IMC scenarios.”

“The redesign is intended to stimulate correlation between the flight weather conditions and the view from the cockpit, as well as introduce weather decision making to student pilots,” company officials noted.

Hundreds of ICARUS devices are training thousands of pilots in everything from a Cessna 172 to a CH-47 Chinook, company officials added.
