ANCHORAGE – It feels like half of Alaska showed up at the FedEx Maintenance Hangar at Anchorage International on Saturday. In all the years I’ve been coming to the show, I don’t ever remember seeing the show this busy. In addition to thousands of people, and a sold-out exhibit area, a wide variety of planes […]
SUN ‘n FUN an absolute blast
The 41st annual SUN ‘n FUN fly-in is the books. It was hot, humid and an absolute blast. I’d say that even if I hadn’t gotten a ride on a B-25 — with four T-6s and four CJ-6s in tow —as part of a My MacDill Air Force Base support flight. No longer just “Spring Break for Pilots,” […]
Superior debuts Gemini 100 diesel
Superior Air Parts introduced the Gemini Diesel engine on opening day of SUN ‘n FUN. Using technology acquired from Power Plant Developments late last year, the 100-horsepower engine already has 10 years and 10,000 flight hours of development, according to Tim Archer, Superior Aviation Group CEO. He added that because of its uniflow design featuring two-opposing-pistons-per-cylinder, […]
Courtesy Aircraft creates non-warbird sellers program
Long known as a warbird and classic aircraft broker, Courtesy Aircraft has added a second product line for anyone wanting to advertise the sale of their own aircraft. “We often get calls from individuals asking us to list their aircraft and we end up turning them down simply because our knowledge of that type of aircraft […]
Build Your Own Door kit from Schweiss

Provide the designers at Schweiss the dimensions of your hangar opening, tell them where you want doors and windows, if you do, […]
Picture of the day: What is it?
In Vintage Aircraft Parking at this week’s SUN ‘n FUN is an odd looking twin-engine taildragger that — in just the few minutes I was chatting with owner Eric Hayes from Mobile, Ala. — elicited a great many “oohs,” “ahhs,” and “what is its?” It’s a 1965 Dornier Do 28 B1. “The plane is a handful […]

Spuds and STOL Tips at SUN ‘n FUN
The Recreational Aviation Foundation will host its annual Potato Bake Thursday, April 23, at the RAF Fire Hub in the SUN ‘n FUN campground starting at 6:30 pm. This year the RAF will play host to BackcountryPilot.org contributor Patrick Romano to lead a backcountry safety seminar based on his popular STOL Tips series. Romano, a backcountry flight instructor, has […]
A niche of a niche
Do you hold an Israeli pilot certificate? If so, are you looking to add a seaplane rating? Well, I’ve found the guy. Probably, the only guy – in the world – who can help you. How’s that for a niche market? Rich Hensch, owner of Florida Seaplanes, is that guy. From his time working with United […]
