By Meg Godlewski · January 14, 2005 ·

When Isabelle Chinuhuk asks her parents, Jenifer and Jamie, “How did I get here?” they can honestly answer “by float plane.” The little girl was born Dec. 26 aboard a Pacific Airways deHavilland Beaver en route to Ketchikan. The Chinuhuks live in Metlakatla and didn’t expect the baby until mid-January. Pacific Airways is a scheduled […]

Dine with Orville and Wilbur

By Meg Godlewski · January 14, 2005 ·

Most pilots agree that you can’t have a good airport without a good restaurant, so when The Narrows Landing restaurant opened last summer at the Tacoma Narrows Airport (TIW) in Gig Harbor, Wash., there was dancing in the hangars. Owners are Hal, Dossie and Tom Barker. Tom, in addition to being the chef, is Hal […]

Essco to the rescue

By Meg Godlewski · December 24, 2004 ·

The Essco Aircraft Co. is doing its part to help the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport near Detroit. In October the museum lost nearly everything in a devastating fire. Fast-thinking volunteers kept the museum’s three airworthy World War II era aircraft, a B-17, a B-25 and a DC-3, safe from the flames. However, […]

The privately owned, public use airport, once known as Carleton […]

Forget shopping

By Meg Godlewski · December 10, 2004 ·

The closest most people get to a P-51 Mustang is looking at a picture. Unless, of course, you get your hands on an “aircraft” that’s a computer simulation of the ones flown by the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black pilots in the American military. The simulator is part of the A.C.E.S. Flight Simulation attraction at […]

NASCAR puts brakes on new track

By Meg Godlewski · December 10, 2004 ·

Pilots at Arlington Municipal Airport (AWO) in Arlington, Wash., no longer have to worry about a NASCAR track being built near the field. On Nov. 22 International Speedway Corp. and the politicians of Snohomish County put the brakes on negotiations. The ISC wanted the community to put up $250 million for construction of the track. […]

Can planes and parks share space?

By Meg Godlewski · December 10, 2004 ·

Do you know someplace where an airport and a public park peacefully coexist? The Friends of Meigs Field would like you to share that information with the Chicago Park District. The Friends of Meigs are smarting from an article that recently appeared in the Chicago Tribune in which Arnold Randall, the department’s director of planning […]

By Meg Godlewski · December 10, 2004 ·

It has been more than two years since Harry Ingram bought the assets of the Taylorcraft Aviation Co. and set up a factory in LaGrange, Texas, with intentions of producing the tried and true F-22 design.
