Recycling to renew aviation

By Janice Wood · December 29, 2010 ·

Members of the Thomas Wathen Foundation at Flabob Airport (RIR) in Riverside, Calif., have a new recycling project: They collect aviation magazines from a variety of local pilots and enthusiasts and then deliver them to 22 different schools.

So far, they have dropped off over 50 cases of slightly used copies of General Aviation News, Sport Aviation, Flying, AOPA Pilot, Plane & Pilot, Pacific Flyer,  and Inflight USA.

The schools are pleased to get the magazines that their budgets would not permit in these tight economic times and report that the students have spent considerable time perusing the various issues.

Collection and distribution is organized and handled by Al Gester (pictured). “It’s an exciting program for us,” said Kathy Rohm. “The subscribers are happy to drop them off and in the end the kids are thrilled to learn more about the world of aviation. It’s prompted quite a few kids to visit the airport. It really doesn’t take a lot time and it’s something we’d like to see other airports or EAA Chapters doing in their own regions.”

I’ve been doing this with my aviation mags for 40 years.
