Site preparation begins for Sierra Industries hangar addition at UVA

By Janice Wood · January 23, 2011 ·

Site preparation has commenced for Sierra Industries’ expansion into its fourth aircraft hangar at Garner Field Airport (UVA) in Uvalde, Texas.

Building on a 28-year history of business jet aircraft upgrades, Sierra Industries is adding 18,000 square feet to its facilities. Uvalco Supply Company of Uvalde is the contractor for the expansion, expected to be completed by late spring. The addition of 6,000 square feet of new office space and refurbishment of Sierra’s three existing hangars is planned once the new hangar is completed, according to company officials.

In addition to its Cessna Citation business jet service, repair and performance modifications, Sierra recently added several long-term contracts with a variety of entities. These include multi-year aircraft maintenance contracts with the U.S. Army and the Department of Homeland Security as well as multiple technology and product development agreements with Hawker Beechcraft. These contracts, along with increasing demand for maintenance services and proprietary aircraft upgrades, have stretched the existing hangar and manufacturing facilities to the limit, company officials said.

SkyWay Group and Sierra CEO Mark Huffstutler remarked, “Despite a challenging economic environment in 2009 and early 2010, we invested heavily in our institutional business, resulting in the award of several long-term government and private industry contracts that provide a welcome base of stability as well as new growth opportunities for our business and for the Uvalde economy. This growth in business has created a need for additional facilities as well as a demand for increased employment. We plan to grow our workforce by 30% this year to meet our rapidly expanding business.”
