Women in Aviation forms LA chapter

By Janice Wood · April 25, 2011 ·

Women In Aviation, International’s (WAI) newly formed Greater Los Angeles Chapter will hold a meeting and mixer at Encounters Restaurant at LAX on Thursday, April 28, at 6 p.m. Anyone interested in aviation and helping to encourage youth to aspire to all careers in aviation is encouraged to attend. Officials say the chapter’s goal is to reach 100 members by this time in 2012.

WAI is a nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization dedicated to providing networking, education, mentoring and scholarship opportunities for women (and men) who are striving for careers in the aviation and aerospace industries. In addition, WAI promotes public understanding of the accomplishments and contributions of women in aviation. This includes historic notables such as Amelia Earhart, Bessie Coleman, Eileen Collins, Jeana Yeager, Nicole Malachowski, and many others.

The Greater L.A Chapter membership consists of pilots, military members, engineers, aviation attorneys, ATC operators, and other airline and airport workers and students. The chapter will focus on community outreach efforts to encourage young people to pursue aviation careers, local speakers and tours of aviation facilities and landmarks and educational and networking activities throughout the year. The chapter also will be involved with Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum, local chapters of The Girl Scouts of America and L.A. area schools. Other ideas for community involvement, events and education are encouraged to be brought to the mixer.

Women In Aviation, International began in 1990 and was formally established in 1994 to encourage women to seek opportunities in aviation. According to the FAA, of the nearly 600,000 active pilots in the United States, approximately 6% are women and only slightly more than 3% ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) rated. Women account for only 3.85% of the more than 500,000 non-pilot aviation jobs in the United States.

WAI membership is open to women and men from all segments of the aviation industry, including general aviation, corporate, commercial and military aviation. Membership is available to anyone with an interest in aviation.
