WWI: The Air War

By Janice Wood · May 5, 2011 ·

Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, Calif., will host a Living History Day Saturday, May 7, featuring “WWI: The Air War.”

There will be five guest speakers moderated by historian J.R. Williams. The museum also will premiere a World War I documentary, “The Millionaires Unit,” presented by producers Ron King and Darroch Greer. World War I re-enactors also will be on site, while members will get a chance to ride in a Stearman.

Javier Arango, Director of the Aeroplane Collection and Board Member of the Smithsonian Institution Air & Space Museum, also will share his personal experience as a test pilot of these antique aircraft.

Oswald Boelcke

Lance Bronnenkant, VP “League of WWI Aviation Historians,” will use multiple contemporaneous sources such as interviews, articles and family correspondence to dive into the characteristics and personality of Oswald Boelcke, the father of fighter pilot aviation and mentor of Manfred von Richhofen (The Red Baron).
