Eastern Iowa’s Aviation Heritage, a new book from Arcadia Publishing, captures Eastern Iowa’s long-time fascination with flight. 
From primitive air gliders and balloons to today’s modern airplanes (and everything in between), aviation enthusiasts in Eastern Iowa have had their heads in the clouds since the late 1800s.
Written by Iowa native and aviation history expert Scott Fisher, the book explores the region’s rich aviation traditions through historical photographs and descriptive captions.
Like many Iowans, aviation became Fisher’s passion after witnessing an air show at a local county fair as a child, a long-standing tradition that continues today. “Our great-grandparents observed P.T. Barnum’s balloon aeronauts and parachutists, while our grandparents saw the early barnstormers in their cloth-constructed biplanes,” he says. “Then our parents took us to the post-war air show extravaganzas, which get larger and more dynamic each year.”
