Air Zoo to open Tuskegee Airmen exhibit

By Janice Wood · May 19, 2011 ·

On May 21 the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, Mich., will open The Test: The Tuskegee Airmen Project, an exhibit about the first black combat aviators who served in the U.S. military during World War II.

The Tuskegee Airmen were part of an effort by the U.S. War Department to determine if blacks were capable of being effective airmen. In 1943, the first squadron of black aviators were deployed to North Africa to enter combat while beginning the critical test phase of the “Tuskegee Project.” The outcome of this test ultimately affected the future opportunities of blacks in and out of the military.

The Test: The Tuskegee Airmen Project tells the incredible story of these men and pays tribute to them through photographs, narratives, models, maps and graphics. The exhibit was created by nationally recognized photographer Jerry Taliaferro and has previously been on display at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit and The Kansas City Public Library.
