Computer donated to Central Florida Aerospace Academy

By Janice Wood · June 11, 2012 ·

Captain Judy Rice and the flight crew of ThinkGlobalFlight.org recently donated a new HP touch-screen computer to the students of Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA), which is on the campus of SUN ’n FUN on the Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport in Florida.

“We wanted the students at Central Florida Aerospace Academy to have a new computer not only for studies and flight planning, but also for ThinkGlobalFlight.org’s first Student Command Center, which is at CFAA,” said Rice. “This donation to the academy was made possible, in part, by a significant donation from a couple in Europe who are passionate about aviation and education.”

Rice is setting up Student Command Centers (SCC) around the world to promote S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. Students participating in the centers will be able to interact with the ThinkGlobalFlight.org flight crew via in-flight texting, satellite phone, video Skype and Facebook pages as the Cirrus SR20 G3 travels around the world. Additionally, students will be able to access the Fly To Learn curriculum, powered by X-Plane software, on the Internet, to conduct in-flight experiments.

The around-the-world flight is scheduled to take off from Honolulu, Hawai’i in the fall of 2013. ThinkGlobalFlight.org officials note they have already signed up dozens of schools in the United States, England, Norway, Africa and other international host schools.

In addition to signing up schools internationally to participate in the Student Command Centers, Rice has been successful at garnering financial support and in-kind donations from multiple sponsors including Guidance Aviation, Fly To Learn, Gulf Coast Avionics, X-Plane, Laminar Research, Brightline Bags, Turtlepac, Aerox, Pilot Journey and Spidertracks.
