Fore! Washington airport debuts fly-in golf program

By General Aviation News Staff · September 9, 2014 ·

The city of Colville, Wash., has teamed with Dominion Meadows Golf Course to encourage GA pilots to fly into the city’s general aviation airport and play a round of golf at the adjacent golf course.

Pilots flying in with family and friends to Colville Municipal Airport can notify the Dominion Meadows Pro Shop (509-684-5508) ahead of time to arrange a tee time.

Dominion Meadows will either pre-position the required number of golf carts at the airport, or pick the fliers up at the airport ramp. The fly-in group will simply load themselves and their clubs on the carts and come directly through the golf course gate, check in with the course staff, and proceed to the first tee.

As an introductory incentive, Dominion Meadows is offering program participants a package of two 18-hole rounds, cart, and small warm-up bucket of balls for $54.

“Recreational pilots are always in search of the proverbial $100 hamburger,” airport officials said in a prepared statement. “Well, compare the value here — twice the value for half the price! Even non-golfing aviators are likely to take up this wicked mistress of a sport when they hear about this program.”

Golf courses around the country are losing money due to waning popularity. It’s just that the golfers are finally finding out that this “game” really accomplishes little. Truly an example of the “emperor has no clothes”.

Good point, Tom. Which begs another question… how many hours of flying can you get out of one round of golf? And which is more “relaxing”? (Okay. So that’s two questions.)

Anyway… I have seen, more than once, guys come off the golf course really keyed-up & pissed-off. The only time I’ve seen anyone climb out of the cockpit angry is when they’d been cut-off in the pattern. And even then it was more of a “time for a discussion”, rather than a “throw something at the wall”, moment.

Maybe that’s because it’s far easier to control the “4 forces of flight” than it is to control the flight of a dimpled ball.

Do you think any of them have been convinced by the Devil to place a few “bets” on the game outcome? Surely not……………

Naw. Never happen. Besides… even if it did, they’d only be “gentlemanly” bets. You know… just to spice thing up a bit.

As for me… I got my spice last evening. By actually landing a tail-wheel airplane. (Dang instructors. Always askin’ ya to do the impossible.) I’d never done that before. and ya know what? It didn’t come around on me. Other than being a bit off center, it weren’t all that bad a landing.

Now that might not seem like a big deal to most, but I’m a cripple. (Polio, 1957) My legs don’t work all that well. (Got LS my ticket in an Ercoupe.) So I figured I’d never get to fly an “honest” airplane. Was actually intimidated by the thought of it, really. But dang if one of my pals – who’s a ATP & CFI – didn’t figure otherwise. I don’t know if I’ll ever feel comfortable enough to try it solo… but I was still feelin’ kind “high” on the drive home last night. (BTW… Piper J-4. Nice flyin’ aircraft.)

I don’t think even a hole-in-one, on the 17 at TPC Sawgrass, could produce that kind of feeling. (And I apologize for even knowing anything about the 17th at Sawgrass.)

Congrats on not swapping ends but shame on you for the hole # 17 knowledge. Oh well, no one’s perfect. Bore a few holes in the sky for me. Beats the heck out of beating your white balls up the fairway. Can we say that here? Thank the Lord I missed the polio thing but had close friends that did get it. I remember getting the shot and later the vacine on the sugar cube. Jesus loves you.

Besides… think of all that wasted runway space.

Okay. So maybe not ALL of them “fairways” are suitable for take-offs & landings. But they could still be put to better use than chasin’ a little, white ball around.
