Because flying is cool
An in-flight collision with a bird during the approach, which resulted in damage to the vertical stabilizer.
The pilot's delayed decision to abort the takeoff, which resulted in a runway overrun, impact with a fence, and a nose-over.
The pilot's failure to conduct the engine starting procedures in accordance with the Pilot’s Operating Handbook, which resulted in an engine fire.
The student pilot's failure to maintain directional control during landing, which resulted in a runway excursion and collision with a drainage culvert.
Elliot Block's new (to him) Cessna 140A is a modern day aviation story, made possible by Instagram, Craigslist and new friends who encourage new adventures.
The survey asks about "any software you might currently use for maintenance tracking and air-readiness and what developments you might like to see in those areas."
General aviation took a hit in 2020 due to the pandemic, with billing and deliveries down, but GA officials are confident recovery is on the way.
Even in the year of the pandemic, LSA registrations grew in 2020.
John Bendig submitted this photo and note: "My 1974 Maule M5-220C based at Erie International Airport (KERI) in Pennsylvania. The plane is hooked up to a heater in the engine cowling and battery minder. The airport does not support GA privately owned hangars and does not plow the taxiway to private hangars, so we must put our planes in storage for the winter. Even if you are equipped with skis, you are not allowed off the runways."
While activity plummeted 40% at Minneapolis International Airport in 2020 due to the pandemic, it was up 19% at Flying Cloud Airport, thanks to flight training and recreational flying.
Maksym Pastushenko submitted this photo and note: "Night at Block Island State Airport (KBID) in Rhode Island."
Founded in 1928 by America’s early flight pioneers, KVNY has played an important role in both San Fernando Valley and aviation history.
Flex can bring new data into the cockpit or replace legacy gauges. Possible configurations include radar altimeter display, GPS clock, airspeed indicator, fuel management display, and more.
From free videos on YouTube and free monthly webinars to instructor-led training, Garmin offers a variety of training opportunities for general aviation pilots.
While 2020's sales marked the lowest amount of sales in the Avionics Market Report's nine-year history, officials with the Aircraft Electronics Association note that the industry experienced "healthy sales growth" during the last six months of the year as pandemic restrictions loosened.
The line of antennas, specifically designed for experimental and light- sport aircraft, includes solutions for ADS-B and more.
It's good to stretch your wings, trying out new aircraft or flying into a new airport. But make sure you are prepared or you may find yourself in trouble.
The Jacksonville Executive training center is one of the busiest in ATP's nationwide network of more than 50 locations, with students at Jacksonville flying over 10,000 hours in 2020, according to company officials.
Besides teaching all the basic aerobatic maneuvers, the new course from Sporty's tells you how to get started as an aerobatic pilot, from the legal considerations to preparing physically.
Megan Vande Voort sent in this photo with a note: "After a long day of training flights, the C172 takes in the winter Iowa sunset."
My new engine is burning a quart of oil every four to five hours. Some “experts” are telling me I probably have glazed cylinders and others say just keep on flying it hard and the consumption will drop. Should I be concerned?
What could cause such high levels of aluminum in the oil? Inactivity plays a big role, according to our engines expert Paul McBride.
Through normal operation your engines blow the first quart overboard ending up on the wing and the flaps. I could tell you that this was a design by Lycoming in an effort to prevent corrosion in those areas, but that wouldn't play very well, so we won't even go there! Seriously, it's nothing to worry about, as long as your engine does not have a history of excessive oil consumption.
This 1946 engine may very well be able to be overhauled and put back in service, providing you have the engine logbook.
When it comes to radio communication between flying objects, the single most important thing a pilot can do is be on the right frequency.
The Leatherman multi-tool is one I’ve seen many a pilot sport. Apparently, it’s so well loved it’s even found its way into reports to NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System.
Inattention to detail can lead to accidents.
Excitement while flying can be good and bad.
The Boeing 221 Monomail showed elegantly simple lines and modern technologies that set the stage for the company's growth in the design of large aircraft, including the iconic B-17.
The Douglas A-20 Havoc attack bomber represents an advanced pre-war design that proved effective in combat in World War II. Modifications kept the A-20 viable to the end of the war.
The launch from the Navy's first aircraft carrier, USS Langley, on Nov. 18, 1922, signaled the beginning of practical aircraft carrier operations.
The aircraft looked very much like a scaled down commercial jetliner, with four individually podded engines suspended from pylons in a fashion reminiscent of the Boeing 707.
When the day comes that I should not fly any longer for medical reasons, I will tell my personal physician and quit flying. The FAA will play no part in my decision.
A Lazy 8 is not an extreme aerobatic maneuver, but is a bit of a thrill for a stodgy ho-hum pilot like me. I love to practice Lazy 8s because of the sensations in the seat of my pants and the challenge of making them near perfect.
If I am not flying a stable approach to final — and I now know what that looks and feels like — I automatically go-around. No more nervous approaches, fears, or anguish.
Flying Is the perfect combination of everything I love: Freedom, this great state and nation, technology, beauty, photography, practical and speedy travel, and socializing.
In all my years in aviation and for all the tens of thousands of pilots and mechanics I’ve met, I’ve never met a single person who said, “My life was going just great until I got into aviation. That’s when it all went to hell.”
Englaero is English spoken by an individual who mixes a thick dose of aeronautical terms into their vocabulary. To a native English speaker, it’s absolute gibberish. To a college level English teacher with no aeronautical background, it’s incomprehensible.
A dilapidated hangar is the almost magical destination a few dozen teenagers consider to be their home inside the airport fence. It’s where skills are learned, pride is developed, and the path to a better, brighter, more affluent future is glimpsed for the first time by kids who have never had an outlet for their aeronautical dreams.
Beyond all logic and reason there remains a group of nitwits who disparage female pilots because…now, brace yourself for this logic…they’re women.
The Lightning from Arion Aircraft is available as either a Light-Sport Aircraft (SLSA or ELSA) or as an Experimental Amateur Built version. Bonus: It's built in the USA.
Expect to see the Whisper in the U.S. by April 2021.
If I tell you that Part 103 ultralights are selling exceptionally well during COVID-19, would you believe it? I don’t blame you if you don’t — most would agree with you … but all the naysayers are wrong.
Whether flying an aircraft – unintentionally – into IMC or falling asleep at the yoke on a perfectly clear day, things happen. And those are just two examples of mistakes we can make.
There should be no misunderstanding: Drones WILL be fully integrated into the National Airspace System at some point in our future. Would you prefer a seat at the table or just wait to see what happens?
Caution for elephants near the runway.
Fittingly, the barn is “a tribute to Ben Ryan and the sacrifices he and his wife Butchie made for the country. Ben flew a P-38 in the Pacific during WWII, and Butchie served as a nurse with the Army Nurse Corps.”
The push for unleaded avgas began in the 1980s. It seems we're still no closer to an answer today than we were then.
The answer is fairly easy from a legal standpoint because the specifications state that the supplier must guarantee that the oil stay within spec for at least three years. But what's the "technically safe" shelf life of aviation oil?
Only — and I do mean only — use oils that meet the Mil/SAE specs recommended.
The principals for improving gas mileage in an aircraft are optimizing engine operation, minimizing weight, reducing aerodynamic drag, and improving operation parameters.
