In a new blog post on Air Facts, Tony Vallillo, a retired American Airlines captain, says that “Sully” — the Clint Eastwood movie about the Miracle on the Hudson, U.S. Airways Flight 1549 — is a movie that “any pilot, and especially an airline pilot, can watch without being mortified by technical and artistic errors on the part of the filmmakers.”
“The portions of the movie that depict the flight and the water landing are done to near perfection,” he continues. “Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart not only play the role of airline pilots superbly, but they even manage to look a good deal like the originals.”
Read his full review here, then weigh in below. Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think of it?

Upon further review of my own stupidity, yes it was an A320 Sully plunked into the Hudson. Sorry if I offended anyone with my comment about the plane being an MD80 vice A320. I don’t know why i thought it was a MD80 so I will chalk it up to a Senior moment. Eastwood got it right!!
I am sure it is a great movie, but it is not accurate. Sully landed a MD80 in the Hudson not an Airbus A320. How could the movie producer get this so wrong? There would be a possibilty that an A329, due to its engines under the wings, would have flipped upside down upon water entry. That would have created a whole new end to the real life drama.
The movie is great. Shows the pride of all the crew members working as a TEAM.
Comforting to read professional pilot’s review that the movie was authentic which I assumed it would be given Eastwood’s superlative reputation as a director and Sully’s close following of the writing and scenes related to the actual emergency. The rest of the movie related to the NTSB investigation, etc., may have taken some literary and dramatic license for the sake of entertainment which is to be expected. Looking forward to watching it when it’s released on DVD.
