Sporty’s PJ2 Hand-Held COM Radio has been upgraded.
According to Sporty’s officials, the PJ2+, is the only handheld aviation radio that can be connected to standard aviation headset plugs without using a special adapter. It also has upgrades requested by customers, including:
- A 3.5mm jack that accommodates wired earbuds or computer style headsets,
- 6 watts peak transmit power to maximize range, especially important in an emergency,
- An automatic noise limiter, and
- A high contrast backlit screen with a glare-reducing face, making it easier to read in direct sunlight.

“An emergency is no time to be searching for a headset adapter or a user manual to figure out how to turn your radio on,” says Sporty’s Director of Aviation Products and Marketing Doug Ranly.
The PJ2+ comes with an alkaline battery pack, antenna, 100-240v wall plug, USB-A to USB-C power cable, and belt clip. The radio can be operated directly from the USB-C plug, with either a cigarette lighter plug or backup battery pack.

Headsets with standard twin plugs (PJ-055 and PJ-068) require no adapter; for Lemo/6-pin plug headsets, an adapter is available for $39.95.
The PJ2+ COM Radio is available now for $249.

What this radio needs is a rechargeable battery pack. When using the radio on the batteries, the batteries will not last very long.
Needed is to develop an after market optional charging stand to keep the radio in while being listening to and fully charged and ready for use when removed.
This radio eats non rechargeable batteries. Not many people keep a supply of batteries around. Plus the batteries are a pain to change.
Hi Mac, the first model has that, I bought it as soon as it became available. Not sure if the newer one is interoperable or not, though.
