By General Aviation News Staff · March 13, 2023 ·

Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 scholarship program sponsored by Sporty’s Pilot Shop and flyGIRL.

The $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student pilot to give them “that boost toward first solo or that initial pilot certificate,” according to officials.

Applicants must submit an essay describing their interests and needs, as well as their resume, medical certificate, and log book copies.

Deadline to apply is April 1, 2023.

It is not stated here, but is this offer only available to girls? In the interest of “DEI”, is that even possible these days? And how does one define a “girl”? Do aircraft behave differently depending on whether a boy or a girl is at the controls? Not hardly. Females have been flying and running aviation-related businesses for about as long as men have. Women did much of the ferrying of military aircraft during WWII, so clearly there have never really been any barriers to women in aviation. If anything, with all the scholarships and efforts aimed exclusively at females, it’s the young men who are at a disadvantage these days. Let’s just drop all the hyphenated pilots and hyphenated Americans, as such programs are in a sense a form of discrimination and encourage certain groups of people to pursue activities and careers not based on their desire but perks they receive based on their gender, skin color, etc.

This is satire right? If there were no barriers for women why are they still only 8% of all pilots with that number barely climbing in the last 40-50 yrs.? There are plenty of general scholarships for men and women, this is targeted towards increasing female representation in aviation. Thank you FlyGirl for what you do!
