Weight and balance for life

There is a trend making inroads into our national culture that has been so slow and insidious — and we’ve been less than astute at picking up on it. We’re big. Really big. Bigger than we were in previous decades. This ain’t good.

When I was a boy every high school had the major categories of human character represented: The cool kid, the hot girl, the greaser, the jock, the nerd, and the fat kid. The bulk of the student body fell into one category or other. Most of us were not particularly cool or beautiful. We didn’t have an affinity for fixing things or throwing a football. We certainly weren’t on the track to Valedictorian status, and although we weren’t exactly an Adonis or Aphrodite, we could pass muster as a healthy example of a human being in our age bracket.

That’s not the case anymore. Not for the most part, in any case. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but when the naked eye can observe something as being amiss, it is foolhardy to continue to delude ourselves into believing that big-boned, husky, and pleasantly plump are terms of endearment.

The issue began to concern me several years ago when I was doing Young Eagles flights for students from a local high school. Young Eagle flights have a way of making any pilot feel valuable, as if we are the conduit to a whole new world. Kids climb into the cockpit with us to experience something they may find exciting, or nerve-wracking, or nausea inducing. More often than not they come back from that aerial jaunt transformed, at least in the emotional sense. They’ve come face-to-face with flight and realized the apparently impossible is not beyond their reach. It’s eminently achievable. In half an hour their entire spectrum of possibilities is expanded beyond their belief.

That’s assuming they can actually make the flight.

One of the kids I was tasked with flying that day was a 17-year-old boy who would be considered athletic by modern standards. Which is to say, he was big. Not overly tall. He clocked in at 5 foot 9 or 10 inches tall. He was large in girth, however. Bigger than me, and I’m a pretty big boy.

His size wasn’t what concerned me about this young man. It was the fact that he couldn’t get into a Cessna 152 without help. He simply didn’t have the flexibility or muscle tone that would enable him to fold his legs into the cockpit without someone outside the airplane manipulating his appendages for him.

This struck me as odd.

He was 17 years old. In the prime of his life, so the saying goes. I was over 60 years old. Of the two of us I was taller, but lighter, more spry, far more flexible, and able to slide into my seat without difficulty. The teenager huffed, and puffed, and required a squire to fold him into the aircraft. It occurred to me he’d probably need similar assistance getting out too.

As a culture we’ve become fat. We’re out of shape. We encourage our young ones to flirt with the idea of becoming a pilot, but haven’t addressed the issue of their fitness for duty.

Years ago, I became acquainted with the local U.S. Army recruiter. An officer charged with overseeing multiple recruiting stations, his job, which used to involve the fairly simple tasks of taking names and loading young hopefuls onto buses headed for basic training bases, has taken on a new unfortunate twist. They simply can’t find a sufficient number of young people who meet the intellectual and physical requirements to be a soldier.

He reported that up to 90% of applicants were unfit for military service. They were denied. No matter how much they might want to establish a career, or the start of a career, by entering the military, they couldn’t. In most cases it was because the applicants were so physically deficient. Overweight, out of breath, unable to run or lift weights. They were, in effect, damaged goods. And they were still in their teens.

The national average today is that about three-quarters of our youth are not fit enough to enter the military. Realistically, we can postulate they will have issues with their ability to fill other positions as well. Because we’re just too darned fat and out of shape.

My dad was overweight throughout much of his life, from middle age onward. When he died we found lists he’d made of what he’d eaten that day, and wish lists of what he thought he should have eaten. It was not a pretty picture. Employees from the local McDonald’s came to his wake. Apparently, he’d eaten there every day for years — so often they knew his name and his regular order.

In general terms, exercise relates to fitness, diet relates to weight. That’s not entirely true, but it gets us in the ballpark of the issue. As the adults we have the responsibility to set a good example for those who come behind us. Eat better, exercise more. That’s not such a difficult plan.

That unbendable kid got me thinking. And thinking got me acting. I’m still big, but I’m 25 pounds lighter than I was at my peak. I eat better. I’m more intentional about what goes into my refrigerator, my kitchen cupboard, and my meals. I’ve still got a ways to go to get to my ideal weight, and maybe I never will. But the improved lifestyle is worth the effort.

Changes have to be made in life. Our size and our acceptance of obesity as a normal consequence of life should be among those changes. We can do better. For ourselves and for the generations that come behind us. Because if they can’t get into the aircraft, they certainly won’t be able to succeed in their desire to fly it.

    About four and half years ago, my wife and I watched a video called “Forks over Knives”. We, as a nation, have been bombarded with the idea that the only way to get protein is by eating meat. This is Bad Science(or BS for short!) We have been told to drink milk for our bones- the only thing milk is good for is raising a new born calf to 400 lbs.
    As a result of my wife and I changing our eating habits, I am completely off my BP and high cholesterol meds. My weight dropped from 175 to 150, my average BP is in the low 120s over low 80s, and my total cholesterol went from 243 to 121.
    I instruct and coach archery to kids from grade school thru college, I ride my recumbent trike 10 miles a day, and get a mile walk on the days I don’t ride.
    Watch the video, read a book called “How not to Die” by Dr. Greger, and change your health.
    By the way, I will be 80 in December this year.

    As a larger pilot myself, this has always been an issue for me. I got my license in high school in 1996 and I was 6’4 at the time and about ideal weight for my height. I was already to much of me to fly in a 152 with anyone if we didn’t want to fly around in a wheelie all day. I had to sport the 172 and prefered the 180hp models for that little bit of extra. It is not just me though, my generation and more now are just bigger, “fatter too, I agree, but taller for sure.”

    I boarded an American Airlines DC-3 on display about 15 years ago, I was 6’6″ and 250lbs at that point and while I could fit and sit in the pilots seat, there is no way I could not fit in a passenger seat, way too narrow and no leg room at all. This is the same as that high school kid trying to mount himself into a plane that stopped being produced 40 years ago, it was never designed to accommodate the size that everyone has become.

    You’re just now noticing? There is a reason the four-place 172 has been the default trainer in US for decades. Stuffing two average American males into a 152 leaves only enough payload for about ½ a cup of AvGas before they have to taxi back for gas.

    There are many candidates for “the” culprit. All about equally valid so far. However, wildlife biologists tell us that, from their decades of record keeping, both domestic & wild animals are are substantially heavier than in past decades (say, the Teddy Roosevelt days).

    In my mind that points to hormone disrupting chemicals in our water & our air, mostly from plastic manufacturing. But there is little doubt that ample abundance of calories close at hand is a detriment to those of us genetically predisposing to thrive in times of calorie privation.

      Oh good christ, it ain’t that hard. If you haven’t got the willpower to avoid the biscuit line, why would I want you in the cockpit? Head for the beach, put up an umbrella and get out of my airspace.

    Yes, we are “overnourished”. Yes, it is a problem. Habits are hard to change though, and we need to make an effort to stay away from fast food joints. They’re convenient, but the food is crap and will eventually kill you before your time. (How can this be a good business plan? Kill off your customers? Ask the tobacco companies . . . )

      Go to any HARDIES on weekday mornings and watch the groups of senior citizens communing for their daily morning breakfast. They might disagree.

    In a way it’s odd that things are going in this direction. I see many more people exercising today and in the past 10 years than I can remember 20, 30 years ago.

    Yup, we’re all getting heavier [ fat ].! The FAA now uses 190 lb for passenger weight, up from 170 lb…. so, they see the same increase in ‘fat Americans.’
    Many of my pilot friends at our EAA chapter are heavy…190+. It’s interesting that the few ‘trim’ guys are commercial pilots or recent retired USAF pilots. [ we have Beale AFB nearby.]
    I was a distance runner for decades, but now I’ve ‘ballooned’ to 160. But at 5-10 and 76 YO, my Dr. tells me I’m ok .

      JimH — I’m 71 YO, matching you in physical size … but hate to say we’re sort of dinosaurs. I’m proud I can still easily “strap on” my ‘63 C-150C, but it’s become a lonely pastime

      Yes, most retired military personnel, particularly military pilots, fit your observations. But remember that you are only seeing the military weight “winners.” After 28 yrs in uniform, i can’t count the number of shipmates I know who were discharged because they couldn’t hold the line. I won, but barely.

      I suffered 25 cycles of year-to-year dread of the weigh-in & tape measure. 25 yrs of feeling starved & twice a day lap swimming, all to barely squeak under the tape, and only then by cutting the pockets from my gym shorts to gain an extra 3/16s room on the tape. All that on top of the years of family separation, remote tours, sea duty, rotating shifts, & punishingly long duty days.

      Celebrate the winners you see at the club, but they are hardly representative of the military.
