KITTY HAWK, N.C. — The First Flight Society will hold a joint celebration of National Aviation Day with the Wright Brothers National Memorial, Aug. 19, 2024.

Aug. 19 was Orville Wright’s birthday. President Franklin D. Roosevelt created National Aviation Day, deciding for the first time in 1939 that the nation should celebrate the growth and advancements being made in aviation. Orville, born in 1871, was still alive when the proclamation was issued.

The event takes off at 10 a.m. at Dare County Regional Airport (KMQI) in Manteo, N.C., with airplane displays and exhibitors.

The festivities will continue at the Wright Brothers Memorial Park in Kill Devils Hill. The afternoon’s highlights include guest speakers as well as Ranger talks inside the Visitor Center and around the park.

The day will be capped off with a free outdoor movie that will start around 8 p.m. Organizers recommend bringing your own blankets and chairs to watch the movie under the stars.

Admission is free at the airport and the park.

“The mission of the celebration is to provide a fun and educational experience promoting, honoring, and celebrating the accomplishments of the Wright brothers and helping educate the world about aviation,” according to officials with the First Flight Society.
