What are the costliest insurance claims in general aviation?

By General Aviation News Staff · August 29, 2024 · 10 Comments

The AOPA Air Safety Institute team recently researched insurance claims in general aviation to understand the type of claims that can drive up insurance rates.

The findings may surprise you, officials note.

A new video “Reality Check: What are the Costliest Insurance Claims?” breaks down the claims, as well as provides tips to pilots to be “part of the solution” and “you can be part of the solution and “help reduce the cost of aviation insurance.”

The technique discussed to prevent unintentional gear up landings is well worth considering, ie checking m/verifying that the gear is actually down no less than three times prior to landing. I’m amazed it is not taught as a standard.

Pod casts are a waste of time. Do you listen to the radio while you are doing stuff in the shop or while driving or sitting on. the patio?

It would be nice to read a transcript. Pod casts and videos are a waste of time.

The most costly accidents are the ones that keeps happening over and over again no matter what training we take to prevent them and no matter how many FAA seminars we have to prevent them.

To combat this FAA introduced “Risk Management” Or what Instructors and DPEs are required to inform those that learn to fly what to watch out for the can cost money or is deadly…..

So how do we fix it?

Meh, this video only covers smaller mishaps which are NOT the most costly in GA. No insurance claim is more costly than when the widow files lawsuits against everyone who ever signed the logbooks for hundreds of millions of dollars. And this is regardless of the cause.

I think the article is about Aircraft Insurance. The limits of liability on these policies is pretty air tight. The dollar limit is as defined by the policy, a lawsuit will only get you the limit specified in the policy.

Your point is more about other entities and their liability and possible insurance to cover them. The manufacturer of all part and pieces have a potential for liability. Service providers such as FBOs, fuel makers, flight instructors have a potential for liability as well. These are the cost you are speaking of, and it is not a major item in the insurance you purchased for your airplane.

Some people complain they were on the ramp of an FBO for 5 minutes, didn’t buy anything and were charged a ramp fee. How unfair. I don’t like the fee either, but had there been a bad event, an example your passenger you are picking up runs into a prop of another plane, who pays? Not your insurance they were not on your plane? Other plane’s owner? maybe IF they have insurance. The FBO? If so, your ramp fee probably covers some of the legal team and or insurance premium for the FBO?

The video was not too clear, but it’s the combined cost of a repair ‘times’ the large number of claims, resulting in the high total cost of all of these types of damage.

It’s interesting that the 4 most costly type of insurance claims are all during landing.!!
…gear-up, loc-gnd, hard landing, and prop strikes..!

I have found that it requires the highest level of skill, and that this skill deteriorates the quickest, without frequent practice.
So, it looks like a lot of pattern work is in order.!!
