On Dec. 31, 2024, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) officially recognized airstrips in the San Rafael Swell region of south central Utah.
The airstrip recognition was part of the BLM’s Decision Record for San Rafael Swell Travel Management Plan (TMP).
Aircraft-only access is retained at Hidden Splendor and McKay Flat airstrips, while Cliff Dweller and Sagebrush Bench airstrips are open to aircraft and off-highway vehicles (OHV).
The BLM also added language that roads that are designated as “OHV-open” can also be used by aircraft.
Recreational Aviation Foundation Utah Liaison and Utah Backcountry Pilots board member Wendy Lessig has worked diligently to monitor the BLM planning process, and tirelessly encouraged public comments, according to RAF officials.
“No airstrips were lost or denied in the TMP process and decision,” noted Lessig. “All four of the airstrips in the San Rafael Swell were recognized by the BLM.”
Notable, according to Lessig, is that this is the first Travel Management Plan in which the BLM formally recognizes backcountry airstrips in Utah.
“This outcome is the end result of ongoing involvement from the aviation community,” added RAF Chairman John McKenna. “The RAF is pleased to have our RAF Liaison Wendy Lessig at the forefront of this work.”
