Modern Aviation has won a bid to take over the FBO operations at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) in North Carolina.
Following a competitive Request for Proposal issued by the city of Charlotte, Modern Aviation was selected as the winning bidder of a 20-year management services contract in January 2025. It replaces Wilson Air Center, which has been at Charlotte Douglas for the past 20 years.
Modern will commence managing the FBO operations at KCLT on June 30, 2025.
According to company officials, this will be Modern Aviation’s 18th FBO in the United States and its second in North Carolina.
Company officials added they plan to upgrade the FBO terminal, with initial plans for construction expected to begin in late 2025 or early 2026.
The company also plans to offer positions to all current FBO employees, officials said.

As an ex tenant of Modern at ILM I will say “good luck” to those hoping for a well run FBO. The line people at ILM are great but billing etc is a disaster. They don’t deposit payments quickly and the bills (not itemized) just keep coming even after we vacated our hanger ($900/mo!). We also received fuel and hanger bills for other aircraft! When brought to the attention of the very nice customer service rep, there seemed to be no way for her to communicate with the “main office” on the spot to sort things out. I have heard similar concerns from other pilots as well.
I’m based at CLT. It will be almost impossible improve on the service Wilson Air has provided over the last 20 years. Keeping the current employees will help but I think the service attitude came from the owners – the Wilson family, founders of Holiday Inn. I’m open-minded but I also feel like it’s the end of an era.
Agree. Wilson is leaving some big shoes to fill. Would love to understand how Wilson “lost” the bid and how Modern “won”.
