EGGENFELDEN, Germany — ScaleWings, which manufactures the SW-51, a 72% scale replica of the North American P-51 Mustang, has partnered with MT-Propeller to develop a 33% larger propeller for the airplane.
The larger prop represents the culmination of more than two years of collaboration and development with MT-Propeller, according to company officials, who note the MTV-22 composite prop increases the SW-51’s climb rate by 15%, adding 300 fpm, and reduces takeoff distance by 15%.
The new MTV-22 prop has a connection to the original North American P-51 propeller, according to company officials. MT-Propeller certified and manufactures a full-scale composite propeller for the legendary P-51 and rare P-82 Twin Mustang. Additionally, AVIA Propeller, part of the MT-Propeller Group, manufactures P-51 replacement blades under license from Hamilton Standard.
With this legacy in mind, MT-Propeller created the composite MTV-22 for the ScaleWings SW-51 by replicating and scaling the original 1940s Hamilton Standard P-51 prop blade and tip shape, company officials explained.
“Making certain the SW-51 is an authentic replica of the original P-51 is something we take very seriously,” said Christian von Kessel, CEO of ScaleWings. “Since MT is now making the Hamilton Standard P-51 prop, it made perfect sense to collaborate with them on a new and improved prop for the SW-51.”
The new prop is being introduced as an option beginning with serial number 052. Current SW-51 owners can also upgrade their aircraft with the new MTV-22 prop and spinner, company officials noted.
