By General Aviation News Staff · January 26, 2026 · 2 Comments

Jane Valentine submitted this photo and note: “Russell Valentine, retired AF C-130 pilot, passing on the flying torch to 3-year-old grandson, Jett. Both donned their flight suits for Jett’s birthday flight in the family’s Cessna 310 aptly named “Hercu-Wee.”

I also find the positioning of the photo to be poor. I was always taught to avoid the prop arc – always.

On another note, I think it is a bit of a stretch as to the appropriate use of an Air Force uniform whilst on a personal GA flight. If traveling to an Air Force/military function, yes. I can’t make out his rank, but he’s at least a Captain, likely higher – and he should know better. Of course, maybe he changed to civvies after the photo.

I’d hate to see that cute kid get whopped by a prop at a later time because he’s had his picture taken before holding one.

As an aside, Mr. Valentine doesn’t look particularly happy.

I cringed when I saw this pic. I was taught you should never hold onto a prop like this. Always treat it as if the engine could suddenly kick over. I worked with a guy who had been hit in the head and knocked to the ground when a prop unexpectedly did this.
