New Aviation Maintenance Lab Opens at 06C

By General Aviation News Staff · January 28, 2026 · 2 Comments

Harper College has opened its new Aviation Maintenance Lab at Schaumburg Regional Airport (06C) in Illinois.

The lab, housed in two redeveloped hangars, is the result of a partnership between Harper and the Village of Schaumburg, along with support from federal, state, and industry partners, including $500,000 in federal Community Project Funding.

Harper College recently celebrated the opening of its new Aviation Maintenance Lab. The facility, located at Schaumburg Regional Airport, houses a 1974 Beechcraft Sierra to provide hands-on learning opportunities for Aviation Maintenance Program students.

The college is planning to begin offering Aviation Maintenance degree and certificate programs soon, pending FAA approval of the new facility.

Born and raised in Schaumburg (1961-84). The stories I could tell about riding my purple Schwinn banana seat Stingray bicycle from our house on Cornell Lane to 06C and stilling on the wood post fence talking with pilots as they fueled their aircraft. I knew exactly what to say to the pilots that often ended with a pilot asking me if I wanted to go for a ride. If I live to a 100, I will never forget one ride, the pilot flew us around Midway and up the Chicago lakefront, around O’Hare back to 06C. After we landed, I thanked the pilot, peddled my bicycle back home to tell my horrified mother what just happened. She promptly grounded me for a month. After that month, the next Saturday, I was back sitting on the wood post fence talking with pilots. Great memories at 06C

So tell us, did you get your license and what are you flying?
