The flight instructor stated that the Mooney M20E landed hard, bounced, and the pilot receiving instruction initiated a go-around at a high pitch attitude.
The airplane yawed left and settled to the runway at the airport in Byron, California. The airplane veered off the runway into a grass field, resulting in substantial damage to the left aileron.
The flight instructor told investigators that becoming slow and the inadequate application of the rudder could have been contributing factors.
Both pilots stated that there were no pre-accident failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Probable Cause: The pilot’s improper landing flare, which resulted in a hard, bounced landing and runway excursion. Contributing to the accident was the flight instructor’s delayed remedial action.

Another instructional flight accident? The CFI was experienced and did not act fast enough to prevent the hard landing……It happens …
The Mooney has a laminar flow wing and it stops flying abruptly when getting to slow…..The owner had low time…….There was a passenger and the aircraft had an aft CG
Having flown Mooney aircraft, they require more experience to prevent a hard landing from occurring…..
The CFI claims he has 10 hours in type……?….Probably not enough time in type to handle all situations….
Unfortunately for him he will own this accident………I would have not had a passenger along until I was confident that the low time owner could handle the aircraft….
Flight instruction is a hard job and anything can happen…..The main thing is no one was hurt ….
Regards to all involved……..
