Replace How Many Radars?

By Ben Sclair · February 2, 2026 · 5 Comments

As you might recall, on Jan. 5, 2026, RTX and Indra Group were selected by the FAA to replace up to 612 ground-based radars around the United States.

From the FAA’s press release: “The RTX and Indra contracts will contribute to replacing up to 612 radars by June 2028 with modern, commercially available surveillance radars. Replacements are scheduled to begin this quarter and will proceed on a rolling basis, prioritizing high-traffic areas.”

From the day the contract was announced, there were 907 days to June 30, 2028.

If RTX and Indra got started on Jan. 5, they’d have to install .67 radars per day to meet the terms of the contract.

Together, RTX’s Collins Aerospace division, which will be doing the work for RTX, and Indra have more than 140,000 employees — roughly 80,000 at Collins Aerospace and around 60,000 at Indra.

I do hope they are up to the task and see success.

But dang, that feels like a lot of work in not a lot of days.

Just exactly who is physically manufacturing these dubious “surveillance” radar systems and where under whose validation control? We here in the US haven’t any longer the industrial capacity.
Indra Sistemas, S.A. is a Spanish listed corporate entity.
Sounds like a kiss of death sweet heart boon doggle road to no where money laundering scheme! Oh.. wait is that Taiwan knocking on US/Spanish doors??
I truly hope that I am just an old A&P-IA that will be proven wrong… buy the smell of it has a distinctly out house scent!

Standard government procedure nowadays. Overpromise, overcharge, underdeliver. Business as usual.
