I have a good friend in Gann Valley South Dakota that raises bison exclusively on his ranch. His herd has over 900 head of these massive animals.
The ranch is in Buffalo County north of Kimball SD. Any chance this is from his ranch?

No, the photo was taken over the McGinley Ranch in southern Bennett County near the state line with Nebraska. Most of the Sandhills region occurs in Nebraska with a small sliver occurring in South Dakota.
