A new book “Why Fly: Seeking Awe, Healing, and Our True Selves in the Sky” has been released by Bloomsbury Publishing.
The book was written by New York Times-bestselling author Caroline Paul, who learned to fly in her 20s in general aviation airplanes. In her 30s she moved to a paraglider and in her 40s, a motorized hang glider. Now in her 50s with her long-term marriage ended, she has again turned to the skies as a way of healing, this time by way of a gyrocopter.
In the book, she examines the ways flight, like love, confounds and yet transforms us.
Alongside her own experiences over decades of flight, the book explores the history, art, and science of aeronautics and the impact of flying on others.
Arranged according to the five stages of a flight (Preflight, Taxi, Takeoff, Flight, and Landing), Why Fly explores the beauty and awe that flying brings, and why humans have been obsessed with flight for centuries, according to officials with the publisher.
The book is available in hardcover for $27.99 and as an ebook for $19.59.
