Tom Gresham submitted this photo and note: “A Cessna 182 sits on Bernard Airstrip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho’s Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. This stop was part of a multi-day training session in backcountry flying. Many of the airstrips in the backcountry are long enough for a Skylane, but density altitude remains a constant factor.”

Bernard landing strip is a beautiful, remote wilderness site where only skilled, experienced pilots should land & takeoff. Please recall the incident with renowned mountain pilot instructor Bob Plummer of Plummer Aviation in Challis, Idaho. Each year Bob taught [steep/rugged] mountain flying lessons to Alaskan bush pilots, and Bob was the only pilot that was trusted by ID Fish & Game for flying their biologists in and out of the Frank Church Wilderness. Even though Bob was the best of the best, he was killed when his plane crashed while flying 2-hunters in the mountains above the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. I knew Bob personally; he safely flew me in & out of the same landing strip in the photo…Bernard, next to the Middle Fork.🇺🇸
