Hartzell Propeller has secured an FAA supplemental type certificate (STC) for its new Frontier aluminum propeller designed for Continental O-470-powered Cessna 180 Skywagons, specifically targeting models A through J. The 88-inch propeller utilizes an all-aluminum design featuring two scimitar blades and an aluminum hub, joining the company’s Top Prop product line.

According to company officials, the Frontier propeller maintains the aircraft’s clearance profile while delivering up to a 5% performance improvement in ground roll, total takeoff distance, and climb.

“The Skywagon community has been looking for a way to get more performance from these trusted aircraft without the downtime and expense of an engine upgrade,” said JJ Frigge, president of Hartzell Propeller. “The Frontier is our answer — an affordable, two-blade aluminum Hartzell propeller designed to help pilots get off the ground faster, climb out of tight strips better, and give the Skywagon a presence you can hear as well as feel.”

The upgrade is compatible with Continental O-470 A, J, K, L, R, and S engine models. According to company officials, the upgrade features no RPM restrictions, eliminating yellow caution ranges during climb, descent, or cruise. The installed propeller assembly weighs 55.4 pounds, and the conversion kit comes complete with a polished spinner and all necessary FAA STC documentation.
