SEATTLE — An elite group of car and airplane detailers from around the country are donating their time and skills to make the Museum of Flight’s Air Force One and other large rare planes look their best.
A team of 40 individuals selected and organized by Rennie Doyle of California-based Detailing Success worked their magic on the aging artifacts July 20-26, 2026.
The volunteer detailing team at the museum began more than 20 years ago when Doyle and a handful of volunteers first tackled the Museum’s Air Force One. Since then the number of team members has grown as they took on the task of cleaning, polishing, and preserving more aircraft, including bombers, airliners, and fighter jets. Regardless, job one is always Air Force One, according to museum officials.
In addition to the President’s plane, this year the team will detail the Boeing B-29 Superfortress “T-Square 54,” Boeing 727-100, Concorde G-BOAG “Alpha Golf,” Boeing B-17F, and other aircraft in the Aviation Pavilion as time allows.
The detailers donate their time, with museum donors underwriting other expenses, including equipment, meals, and supplies.
