AeroSouth Brings Carbon Wheel Fairings to Glastar and Glasair Homebuilts

AeroSouth Technology, a provider of drag-reducing components for RVs and other homebuilt aircraft, recently expanded its support to include the Glastar/Sportsman and Glasair designs.

“We knew that the Glastar and Sportsman designs from Stoddard-Hamilton Aircraft would benefit from our efficient, light, carbon-fiber wheel fairings,” said Kent Misegades, founder and president.

“Since we are busy making parts and filling orders, we only pursue a new product when a customer is willing to work with us to prototype things on their aircraft,” he continued. “This past winter, Glastar owner Mark Pollock of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, contacted us, asking if we could adapt our wheel fairings to his airplane. To our good fortune, Mark is an experienced engineer, capable of fabricating some of the simple metal parts needed for this effort. A few months after his call, Mark was enjoying a six-knot speed gain, lower weight, and air doors in his shiny black carbon wheel fairings.”

This was followed by a call from Chris Mahoney of Prescott, Arizona, who was preparing his Glasair III for pylon racing, Misegades noted.

“Chris wanted lighter carbon gear doors, and he needed them in three weeks,” he said. “Ben Misegades, our VP of Engineering, quickly created a set of accurate molds and made three sets of doors, shipping them a few days ahead of our deadline.”

Chris and his pilot, Blake Prewitt, reported good results when the aircraft, dubbed “Blown Budget,” participated in the recent Sport Class Air Racing Association (SCARA) Pylon Racing Training Camp in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The company now offers wheel fairings for all Glastar/Sportsman models on 5.00-5 or 6.00-6 mains in tailwheel or tricycle gear configuration.

“Since the Glastar/Sportsman and Glasair line of homebuilt kits are no longer in production, AeroSouth welcomes owners of these aircraft to contact us to see how we can make them even more capable,” Misegades concluded.
