FAA Offers Free Pilot Hypoxia Training at Fort Meade

By General Aviation News Staff · October 20, 2026 · Leave a Comment

The PROTE lab.

Fort Meade Executive Airport (KFME) in Maryland is hosting the FAA’s Portable Reduced Oxygen Training Enclosure (PROTE) for free hypoxia awareness training from Oct. 21-24, 2026.

Provided by physiologists from the FAA’s Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), the 45-minute sessions allow pilots to experience simulated hypoxia in a controlled environment to recognize symptoms of oxygen deprivation.

According to airport officials, the hands-on training aims to improve pilot safety at higher altitudes, where hypoxia can impair judgment, coordination, and decision-making. Sessions run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21-23 and 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Oct. 24 at Hangar 85, located at 7501 General Aviation Drive, Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.

Participants must be at least 18 years old and hold a current FAA medical certificate or BasicMed qualification. Attendees should bring government-issued identification and medical documentation to check-in 30 minutes prior to their scheduled time. Advance registration is required through a pilot’s FAA WINGS account.
